5 Benefits of Calendula Flowers and How to Use Them

The flowers of Calendula officinalis, known commonly as pot marigolds, are often found decorating lawns and garden hedges.

Yet, the real beauty of these flowers doesn’t lie in their golden-orange hue but in their various medicinal benefits.

Calendula flowers contain antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and healing properties. (1) They are an important component of many creams and ointments.

A study published in Pharmacognosy Review noted that pot marigold extract is used in hundreds of topical medicines. (1)

Health Benefits of Calendula Flowers

Here is a list of the benefits of calendula flowers:

1. Facilitates wound healing

Calendula extracts stimulate collagen production to reduce wound healing time. They also contain antioxidant and antimicrobial properties that can prevent wound infections.

Studies show that Calendula’s anti-inflammatory properties help curb inflammation and irritation. (2)

How to use:

2. Soothes skin infections

Calendula flowers have potent antiseptic, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties, which help heal infections and relieve skin irritation such as rashes. (1)

How to use:

  1. Crush a couple of Calendula flowers.
  2. Add 2 tbsp of aloe vera gel to form a paste.
  3. Allow this paste to dry over the irritated skin.

3. Improves oral health

Calendula’s anti-inflammatory properties can help fight swelling and pain associated with gingivitis.

Calendula is also antimicrobial and can protect against cavities, plaque, and tooth infections. (3) Thus, many toothpaste and mouthwash formulations contain Calendula extracts.

How to use:

  1. Boil 2 tbsp of dried Calendula flowers in 1 cup of water.
  2. Cover the pot and let it simmer for 10 minutes.
  3. Strain the liquid.
  4. Allow the solution to cool, and your Calendula mouthwash is ready.

4. Reduces muscle cramping

Calendula extracts contain antispasmodic properties – they help relieve muscle cramps. They have traditionally been used to soothe menstrual cramps. (4)

How to use:

Method 1

  1. Crush 2 Calendula flowers and a handful of flaxseeds to a fine powder.
  2. Warm some water and add the powder to it to form a paste.
  3. Apply this mixture to the cramped muscle.
  4. Use a thin muslin cloth or gauze to cover the area.
  5. Let it rest for around half an hour.

Method 2

Boil some dried Calendula flowers to make a relaxing tea.

5. Soothes diaper rash

Calendula is considered to be a very efficient solution for diaper rash (5) due to its anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties and high content of flavonoids. Flavonoids help protect the skin against free radical damage.

Calendula is gentle and effective on babies’ skin.

How to use:

  1. Store Calendula flowers in a clean glass jar.
  2. Pour some olive oil into the jar.
  3. Shake the jar well before sealing it with an airtight lid.
  4. Place the jar in a warm, dry place.
  5. Strain the solution after a month and store the oil in a clean jar.
  6. Apply a few drops of this Calendula oil to any rash for relief.

Side Effects and Precautions

Calendula extracts are a natural ingredient and usually do not cause side effects. However, the following effects may be seen in some people:

  • Allergic reaction: Some people allergic to Asteraceae/Compositae plants may also be allergic to calendula. (1)
  • Pregnancy: Do not use Calendula if you are pregnant as it can harm the fetus.
  • Sedative medications (CNS depressants): Calendula should not be used along with sedatives or sleep medications as it may cause excessive sleepiness or drowsiness.

Final Word

Calendula flowers are not only attractive but also useful for a number of health issues. It is a good idea to grow some in your home.

Always consult a doctor before using any herbal plant for treatment.
